This evidence-based math intervention is tied to second grade standards and is great for special education math goals and tier 2 small group math interventions (RTI).
These sequential lessons are easy to teach, with enough material for 8 weeks of instruction!
Counting the value of a mixed group of coins can be tricky. This step-by-step workbook teaches students to use touch dots to make it much easier!
Most students are able to skip count by 10’s and 5’s and are therefore able to count groups of dimes and nickels without too much trouble. It gets more difficult, though, when quarters are added and coins are mixed together. Instead of going back and forth between counting by 25’s, 10’s, 5’s, and 1’s it is much simpler to use the touch dot method and only count by 5’s and 1’s. These lessons introduce how to do this in a structured, sequential way.
Initially touch dots are provided, but in the next lesson students must draw their own on each coin. Students are taught to start counting on the highest value coins and save pennies for last.
