Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators, Lessons & Word Problems

19 Step-by-Step Math Lessons | Special Education Math Intervention | Fourth Grade Math Level

This Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators lesson workbook includes an example IEP goal, 19 step-by-step math lessons, reviews and assessments. This evidence-based math intervention is tied to fourth grade standards and is great for special education math goals and tier 2 small group math interventions (RTI).

These sequential lessons are easy to teach, with enough material for 4 weeks of instruction!

These lessons introduce students to addition and subtraction of fractions.  Students learn to recognize when denominators are the same.  If denominators are different, students cross out the problem.  In future lessons they will learn to add fractions by finding a common denominator, but for now students will master the basics--working only across the numerators while the denominators remain constant.

Mixed numbers are also introduced, with explicit instruction on how to read and write them.  Problem sets and answers include improper fractions.  Students are not asked to reduce or simplify fractions.  The main objective of this workbook is to achieve mastery in recognizing when fractions and mixed numbers can be added or subtracted and applying this skill to solve word problems.
