Basic Fractions Lesson Workbook

11 Step-by-Step Math Lessons | Special Education Math Intervention | Second Grade Math Level

This Fractions: Basic Concepts lesson workbook includes an example IEP goal, 11 step-by-step math lessons, a review and assessment. This evidence-based math intervention is tied to second grade standards and is great for special education math goals and tier 2 small group math interventions (RTI).

This workbook focuses on the basics of fractions, starting with equal parts of a whole.  Students learn to discriminate between whole units and the number of parts each unit is divided into.  Proper and improper fractions are introduced concurrently.  Lessons are sequential, each with lots of practice repetitions.  Mastering these skills will give students a strong foundation for future fraction analysis and basic operations.

These sequential lessons are easy to teach, with enough material for 2+ weeks of instruction!

Students Will Be Able To:

  • Recognize Equal Parts
  • Partition Shapes into Halves, Thirds, and Fourths/Quarters
  • Label Halves, Thirds, and Fourths
  • Write the Denominator of a Fraction
  • Write the Numerator of a Fraction
  • Write a Fraction to Match a Picture
  • Shade a Picture to Match a Fraction
  • Compare Halves, Thirds, and Fourths using < and >

Lessons Are Tied to These First & Second Grade Math Standards:

  • Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares (CCSS 1.G.A.3)
  • Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape. (CCSS 2.G.A.3)

Teacher Feedback:

❤️ My students loved this resource. I used this in a high school low incidence math classroom as part of a unit on fractions. I appreciated the step by step nature. This packet drills down into each small concept students need to learn in order to understand and master what a fraction is, how to divide an object into equal parts and both how to identify and how to create simple fractions. I was able to use this as both a teaching tool and independent work. When paired with other hands on tools this was absolutely perfect. Thank you so much for this resource." -Trisa R.

❤️ “I highly recommend this resource for introducing fractions. It is excellent and breaks every step down and provides LOTS of practice." -Megan W.

Wonderful resources!

I have used several curriculum workbooks from Math to Mastery, and they have all been amazing for my AuDHD son! I plan to purchase many more as we move forward. We are a homeschooling family, and we have tried many different math resources. Angela really seems to understand my son's needs. The explicit teaching of each skill, breaking it down step by step and the organizational support for the student is fantastic. My son has good conceptual understanding but has always struggled with staying organized and working through multi-step problems. I love that he is able to work more independently with these resources. Thank you so much for this curriculum! It has really changed our math lessons for the better!

Excellent, step-by-step curriculum

I am a tutor. I have a larger number of special needs students. Math to Mastery has been such a blessing. The Fractions curriculum breaks down the fraction concept into easy to understand parts. My students are understanding math better, and they are felling better about themselves.

I highly recommend Math to Mastery for anyone who teaches math.
